Senator JP Morrell Urges Residents to Attend Meeting on N. Rampart/St. Claude Streetcar Project

Construction Set to Begin January 2015

NEW ORLEANS (December 31, 2014) — Senator JP Morrell, who represents the area where the new North Rampart Street/St. Claude Avenue streetcar line will run, is encouraging area residents to attend an informational meeting being hosted by the Regional Transit Authority. It will take place on January 7, 2015 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Joseph A. Craig School at 1423 Saint Phillip Street. Construction on the streetcar project is set to begin in January 2015.

The meeting is being held as part of a series of public forums taking place at different stages of the project.

“This new streetcar line will help transform this historic corridor, revitalize neighborhoods, and connect workers with jobs,” said Sen. Morrell. “I have shared neighbors’ concerns with the RTA regarding noise, construction timeframe, lane closures, and bicycle safety, and they have made many compromises. The 2.6-mile streetcar segment will run from Canal St. along Rampart St. (with a spur on Basin Street) along the edge of the French Quarter. The line will run from Elysian Fields Ave. connecting to the Canal Streetcar line and Union Passenger Terminal on Loyola Ave. Streetcars will run in the left travel lane adjacent to the neutral ground. There will be six streetcar stops along N. Rampart St. and St. Claude Ave.
