Councilmember At-Large Donna Glapion and State Senator Gary Carter, Jr. Endorse JP Morrell
Councilmember At-Large Donna Glapion and State Senator Gary Carter, Jr. are both endorsing JP Morrell for City Council At-Large, Division 2 in the November 13 election.
Interim Councilmember Glapion, who currently holds the seat sought by Morrell, said, "I serve as the current Council At-Large for Division 2 and have seen, firsthand, the challenges we face in this city. These problems have been here for generations, like our utilities, streets, and crime. JP is a leader who has been an effective legislator and public servant. He knows that in order to secure a future in our city for generations, we need experienced, yet forward thinking leadership with innovative ideas and the determination to make real change. I'm all in with JP because he loves our city and will work tirelessly to make it work for our entire community and all our neighborhoods."
State Senator Gary Carter, Jr. said, "JP has been a true leader for our city and for Algiers. He helped secure the money for the levee bike path through the Algiers Development District on which we both served. JP fought for our fair share of construction dollars for all the state improvements down General DeGaulle as well as working as part of the legislative team that has consistently delivered for our community. More importantly, he understands the unique needs of Algiers and how it has been taken for granted. He knows that our community must have input on what happens on our streets and the desperate need for our neighborhoods to have real economic development beyond fast food. JP is the leader who will always speak for all of the communities of our city and listen to our voices!"
Morrell has been a relentless advocate for policies that place people first. He started serving our community as a public defender right out of law school and later was elected to the State Legislature in 2006 – where he helped pass a historic package of laws to increase protections for the survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence, and a constitutional amendment to require unanimous jury decisions in felony trials, undoing a Jim Crow-era law in Louisiana. Morrell never backed down from impossible fights when he knew what was best for the people of our city.
JP Morrell said, "I'm incredibly proud to have earned the endorsement of interim Councilmember At-Large Donna Glapion. If anyone knows what the job takes, it's her. Likewise, I'm honored to have earned Senator Carter's endorsement. He and I have worked together for years, and once I'm elected to the City Council, I will continue partnering with him at the state level to deliver for the City of New Orleans."
Morrell will be on the ballot in the Nov. 13 election as the only official candidate of the Democratic Party, and he is also endorsed by New Orleans Coalition, Independent Women's Organization (IWO), AFL-CIO, Alliance for Good Government, Independent Democratic Electors Association (IDEA),UNITE HERE, Voters Organized to Educate (VOTE), United Teachers of New Orleans (UTNO), New Orleans East Leadership (NOEL), the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE), the Southeastern Louisiana Chapter of the National Association of Building and Constructions Trades (NABTU), NOLA Rainbow Advocates, and over 200 women leaders and advocates, among others.
