Dr. Chanel Payne Endorses JP Morrell
Community Activist and Public Education Advocate Dr. Chanel Payne is endorsing JP Morrell for City Council At-Large, Division 2. Early voting is open through Nov. 6, and Election Day is Nov. 13.
Dr. Payne said:
“JP cares about our kids. He understands that we will not incarcerate ourselves out of the Juvenile crime problem. Our city has disregarded the children in our community for too long. Historically, we give less than 2 mils to NORDC while BREC (the Baton Rouge equivalent) gives fourteen mils to recreation and youth programs. That is seven times the investment in a similarly sized city in our same state!
Juvenile Court is underfunded and our kids in crisis lack the resources they need. The City’s solution to funding Early Childhood education last year was to defund the libraries to redirect the money.
Budgets are moral documents, and we need leadership to prioritize our kids. JP knows we cannot continue to rob Peter to pay Paul. If we are going to end the cradle to prison pipeline, we must break the cycle. We need real change.
JP is real change. He understands what needs to be done and, more importantly, he has the will to see it done.”
Dr. Payne's endorsement adds to a long list of community leaders, advocates and civic organizations supporting Morrell for City Council At-Large, Div. 2.
