We Must Actively Regulate Energy
I do not support Entergy passing through the cost of power restoration. I support Council President Helena Moreno in her fight to make Entergy New Orleans (ENO) find other sources of funding for this storm.
Remember, no rate increases or costs can be passed to ratepayers UNLESS THE COUNCIL VOTES TO DO SO. We need ALL Councilmembers and those that aspire to be Councilmembers to speak up and stand up for our people.
The rate payers of New Orleans have already paid, and continue to pay, for a wide variety of costs:
We pay for a power plant in the East that was supposed to provide backup power for events like this.
We already pay into a storm fund for this EXACT purpose - no one should be assuming ratepayers should pay something extra before we learn the true causes of the length of this outage and the actions and decisions that led to the failures of transmission and backup generation.
For years, most councilmembers, like my opponents, have sat back and let ENO run the show with their paid consultants and advisors. Some council members have worked for ENO while others have friends and allies paid with rate payer money.
I’m the only candidate in this race that included actively regulating Entergy as part of their platform when I began this race. Regulators are not supposed to treat a regulated entity as a friend to help throw parades. Regulators should take fines levied against a regulated entity for hiring actors to push an agenda, millions of dollars, to buy Crime Camera for photo ops. While Council President Moreno has shown leadership in challenging Entergy during this trying time, the other Council members aspiring to be Council President have been SILENT.
It’s time to get serious about regulation, about making the company work for US - not just for its shareholders - and, if we don’t make a change now, we’ll be sitting in the dark again in a few years in long lines for expensive gas and free food. We would all rather be in our homes as soon as possible, repairing them.
