12 Days Since Ida

NOLA-9900000000079e3c.png

Thank You, New Orleans.

The last 12 days have been rough.  In the wake of Hurricane Ida, many of us were huddled in the dark and extreme heat, trying to put our homes back together amid the Covid pandemic.

But we're New Orleans, and we always do MORE than is expected.  We took care of each other, cleaned our neighbors' yards, emptied the fridges of our absent friends, and volunteered at every opportunity.

We are a community that comes together in times of crisis to help each other, to lift each other up, and, in doing so, we defy the odds whenever anyone counts us out.

Thank you for reminding me, daily, that ours is a community that supports one another, and I'm humbled to be a part of this wave of goodwill.

Though we have endured hard times, and more are ahead, please take a moment to help the other communities around us that have not fared so well.  As a legislator, I spent a lot of time around this state and Southeast Louisiana is a community unto itself.  Whenever New Orleans has been in need, our neighbors have come to our aid.  It's time we returned the favor.

If you're able, please donate to one of the support organizations below to provide necessary support to the communities that bore the brunt of Ida's impact.

If you'd like to volunteer, please be sure to work through local government or reputable volunteer organizations.  As we seek to get our City back on its feet, these communities will need assistance for months to come, and we cannot forget our neighbors when they need us.  We are New Orleanians, and we always help.

Election Date Update:

Considering the devastation that affected our state, the fall elections have been pushed back to these new dates:

  • Early Voting: October 30 - November 6 (except Sunday, October 31)

  • Election Day: November 13

  • In-Person or By-Mail Registration Deadline: October 13

  • Online Electronic Voter Registration Deadline: October 23

I believe this was the right decision as our community has endured elections marred by displacement and hardship.  Every community is entitled to a free and fair election where we strive for maximum voter participation by those who want to participate.

Today isn't the day to start filling your inbox with campaign info, not while people in our community remain without power in the dark and heat.

Take care of each other, New Orleans, we got this.
