JP Endorsed as Candidate of Democratic Party
The Orleans Parish Democratic Executive Committee is the latest organization to endorse JP Morrell for City Council At-Large, Div. 2, making him the official candidate of the Democratic Party in the race.
"As a lifelong Democrat, it is an incredible honor to be our party's choice for City Council At-Large, Div. 2," said Morrell. "We have a strong record of working together to deliver on our party's values. While I was serving in a divided state legislature, the odds were against our progressive agenda. But with determination and collaboration, we overcame obstacles to achieve the impossible, like defeating 135 years of Jim Crow by ending Split Juries."
As a legislator, JP accomplished much for New Orleans:
He passed a historic package of laws to increase protections for the survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence, including fighting, and defeating, the NRA to disarm abusive spouses of firearms and amending domestic violence laws to include dating partners.
He worked to pass the constitutional amendment to require unanimous jury decisions in felony trials, undoing 135 years of Jim Crow-era laws in Louisiana.
He pushed numerous bills for Equal Pay for Women, Pay Transparency, and to prevent retaliation for seeking Equal Pay.
He championed progressive policies and fought alongside Democratic colleagues and the Governor to expand Medicaid and ratify the Equal Rights Amendment as well as to end the Pink Tax.
As our next City Council At-Large, JP will continue delivering for New Orleans:
His top priority will be reducing crime. To this day, he is the only candidate to release a detailed crime plan that takes a multifaceted approach to making our city safer, including specific measures to reform the juvenile justice system and expand opportunities for our young people.
He will lead the fight to fully fund our recreational and after school programs through NORDC and non-profits throughout NOLA.
He will focus on growing our economy and expanding career opportunities, raising the wage beyond $15 to a living wage that rises with inflation, leveraging the power of the City to diversify the economy and provide modern career readiness programs.
He will create Crisis Intervention Teams that are community-centric and mobile, like the Crisis Assistance Helping Out On The Streets (“CAHOOTS”) model, which provides a reimagined approach to public safety.
He will hold the Sewerage and Water Board to account for its broken billing process, rigged appeal process and new legislation to increase Council oversight over the agency.
He will be a partner in tackling transportation challenges and expanding RTA opportunities for our students and their families.
He will lead the fight to regulate internet access as a true utility and work to create a low cost or free municipal internet option for working families. The COVID pandemic has shown us the sporadic and expensive internet access is unfair and inequitable. All families need internet access yesterday. JP will fight to deliver it.
He will find opportunities and funding to expand early childhood education.
And so much more...
